Seismic design is a rather specialized part of Geotechnical Engineering. It combines elements of seismology, structural dynamics, wave mechanics, probability, risk analysis and other disciplines to help focus on the very difficult problem of seismic actions. These actions often lead to disastrous results with loss of life and severe economic consequences.
